I dont' know where you got your notions about Americans and their concern about retaining, or losing, their
rights under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; but, you've been misinformed. I'm an
American who is pro-gun, and by that I mean, now pay attention Anne-Marie because this is the crux of the
matter, I hold that the founding fathers of my country, specifically our fifth President James Madison, author
of the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights to the Constitution, identified that right for the specific
purpose of the defense of America's citizens against a tyranical government. I'm sure you've studied
some American history, especially the portion where we rebelled against the Crown to seek our
independence. The British government under the King decreed that the colonists would be disarmed,
and this for the purpose of insuring that the colonials did not have the means whereby they could resist
his law. Many transgressions were enacted in law against the colonists by the Crown, one of which
became the primary battle cry for freedom, "no taxation without representation." Without arms to
defend themselves, British troops garrisoned in the various colonies would and could maintain order,
and quell revolt if need be. And so, at the proper time and in the proper place, James Madison wrote that
Americans shall always retain as a God given right, the means to defend themselves against any
government that could and would tyranize them. He knew back then, that even with the best of
intentions, future governments of America might not be as trustworthy as that present government of
the founding fathers, so that never again might Americans have no defense in their persons, or
property, against an overreaching and oppressive government.
This right, the right to self defense, has kept lots and lots of Americans alive when by all rights they
would have perished had they not been able to defend themselves. Their defense has been against
criminals, against corporations (the Robber Barons of American History) who would take from the
people that which was not their own to enrih themselves, and all manner of other predators. The loss of
this right of self defense, we know deep in our hearts, is the first step on a slippery slope whereby we
will lose our freedom, one piece at a time until when we realize they're slipping away and we wish to get
them back, even by force if necessary, we will have the means to do so.
You say you'd rather not have people running around with guns strapped to their persons, that it's not
been necessary in Canada, that in the bush where your forebearers made their living, they had no wild
life to fear, but wildlife is the only thing you identify as an entity that gives fear. You do not identify that in
Canada too, there are predators of the two legged variety from whom her citizens need protection. You
are naieve to think that Canadian police forces will be available to protect all her citizens in their time of
need. It just isn't so as a matter of physical practicality to have a policeman everywhere they might be of
some good. Worse, your government has effectively disarmed Canadians, with the result that violent
crime has risen by 40%, or more. Your own statistics bear that out. The same has happened in Australia
where all firearms have been banned, crime rose even higher. The reason? Your citizens have no
defense, while your criminals do. We do not wish that upon ourselves, nor will we ever give up the right
to defend ourselves for the primary reason OF the Second Amendment. Defense against a government
that is reigning tyranny upon our citizens.
First thing Adolph Hitler did when he seized power in 1930s Germany was to outlaw all firearms in the
hands of the citizenry. From that point onward, he could do whatever he wished with his government
and to his country. And, he did, didn't he? Is your own government safe? Probably! Will you bet your life
that it will remain forever so? I won't.
Respectfully,
